Invest in Fish Project Reports

A Fine New Kettle of Fish: Investing in a Radical Fisheries Managament Initiative

An introduction to the Invest in Fish South West project.

IIFSW Briefing Document1: Boom or Bust - Recruitment Issues

This document explains assumptions for how fish stocks will grow - there's a very pessimistic option (20 yr average), and a slightly less pessimistic option (5 year average). The former is traditionally used by scientists, but recently ICES have started using the latter. We explain the arguments for and against both, and our choice.

IIFSW Briefing Document 2: Validating the Model

In this document, we talk about the rigour of the model, which is best shown by back casting i.e. checking what actually happened in the recent past compared to how the model said it would happen.

Master Options to be Evaluated by Invest in Fish South West ( IiFSW)

This document outlines the options that will be assessed by the steering group through a period of computer simulation (modelling), discussion and consultations. The wide range of  management options were collected from interest groups concerned with the marine environment through a series of consultations, surveys and interviews.

Invest in Fish South West's Shared Values

The Invest in Fish South West steering group have been working closely with the project facilitator to define their overall values with respect to possible management scenarios for fisheries. This document lists the‘shared values’ developed and agreed from these discussions. These will help guide the selection and assessment of the options being considered.

The Motivation, Demographics and Views of South West Recreational Sea Anglers and their Socio-economic Impact on the Region (Please note mortality figures from the previous version of this report have been amended.)

Recreational sea anglers are directly affected and sometimes restricted by fisheries management policies. This report, conducted by Nautilus consultants, provides insight into anglers’ views of current fisheries management policies and their suggestions for future management options. The report, as its title suggests, also looks at recreational sea anglers’ potential economic contribution to the region and investigates the drivers and the interdependencies between recreational sea angling, commercial fishing and the environment.

Analysis of the Legal Policies Relating to the South West

Invest in Fish South West ultimately aims to define a fisheries management strategy that improves fish stocks while balancing the needs of the marine environment, regional economy and local communities. The project understands that in order for the strategy to be credible, it will have to be practical and attainable within the existing legal and institutional situation. This report, conducted by the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), reviews the plausibility of implementing fisheries management options proposed by stakeholder groups thus far within the current legislative and institutional constraints and opportunities.

Imaging Change: a Survey of South West Fishermen (Please note that the total number of SW fishermen and vessels has been amended from the previous version of this report. All figures should be considered estimates as current figures for employment and active vessels are subject to revision.)

This report presents results from a survey of more than 100 fishermen from the South West of England. It provides insight into the opinions and values of fishermen in the region, how they feel about the current fisheries management policies and any suggestions they have for possible changes. This survey was never meant to represent the most popular opinions, but to generate, sample and record a broad range of views. This report has been presented to the Invest in Fish Steering Group and will play an important role in the fisheries management debate.

Analysis of the Interactions between Marine Mammals and Fishing

This report summarises the best available information on marine mammals and their interaction with fisheries within the Celtic Sea, English Channel and Western Approaches. As the nature of studying marine mammals is difficult, the report does not answer all the questions on the many issues surrounding marine mammals. It does however provide a basis for discussion and highlights those areas where large uncertainties remain. This report has been presented to the Invest in Fish Steering Group and will play an important role in the fisheries management debate.

Choose or Lose: a recovery plan for fish stocks and the UK fishing industry
A WWF report, written Dr. Malcolm MacGarvin and Dr Sarah Jones. It was the foundation for the Invest in Fish South West project. The report set a new precedent for fishing and environmental policy and raised the interest and expectation of Government Ministers, EU fisheries policy makers and peer reviewers.

Results from IiFSW community forum: Residents from the South West share their opinions on the fishing industry and wider marine environment.
On the 28 April 2003, Opinion Leader Research conducted a public consultation to assess South West residents' perceptions of the fishing industry within the region. This was a one-day event which engaged 98 individuals across the region. This document provides the findings from the day.
